The investigative committee said a National Guard officer was wounded in the shoulder, and the guards were injured. "Later somebody said that an armed guard had been injured", she said. The men on trial are accused of terrorizing Moscow motorists for months in 2014.

"Prosecutors said the gang members were placing spikes on roads, forcing the motorists out of their vehicles and shooting them dead", the AP reports.

Diana Tatosova, a lawyer for the defendants, said she had been told by the chief investigator in the case that four of the accused had been killed.

"I saw a woman bailiff wounded in the attack", RIA Novosti news agency reported, quoting lawyer Sofia Rubasskaya who heard more than 20 gunshots at the scene.

The investigation into the gang charged a total of nine defendants, all of whom originated from ex-Soviet Central Asian states, with murder, "banditry", robbery and arms trafficking.
