The death toll has risen to seven after a refugee boat sank off Turkey's Aegean coast on Thursday evening, the Turkish Coast Guard confirmed Friday.

Two woman and five children died when the refugee boat carrying 18 people capsized near the Cesme district of the province of Izmir. Authorities said the migrants included Iraqis, Somalis and Syrian nationals. The boat was headed to the Greek islands.

One migrant is missing, while the alleged smuggler is believed to have abandoned the boat while it was sinking and is now being sought.

Three boats and one helicopter were dispatched by the Coast Guard in a rescue operation.

According to the Turkish Coast Guard, 7,801 migrants have been intercepted on the Aegean Sea so far this year, a considerable drop compared to the tens of thousands trying to cross to the Greek islands just a month before the European Union deal came into force early last year.
