Arsenal should pursue Leicester City maestro Riyad Mahrez instead of Everton wantaway and mooted Tottenham target Ross Barkley, according to former Gunners forward Alan Smith.

The Serie A outfit are seeking a replacement for Mohamed Salah, who made the £39million switch to Liverpool earlier this summer, and have earmarked Mahrez as one of the options.

It was reported during the week that an offer of €40m was submitted to Leicester City and that is likely to be the final offer Monchi mentioned.

"We're not just working on one name", Monchi said at Roma's presentation of defender Hector Moreno. "It's true that this could be the last offer, we're evaluating other options".

'In the case of Mahrez it's become public knowledge, with others it hasn't.

But Monchi insisted the Greece global will not be sold, with Roma having already lost defender Antonio Rudiger to Premier League champions Chelsea for an initial €35m.

"He will stay here in Rome, he is happy to be with us and will be there for a long time", Monchi added.

Further to that, the sporting director confirmed that there were alternatives to a potential deal. We have kept all of the key players we meant to keep'.
