Orioles acquired RHP Jeremy Hellickson from the Phillies for OF Hyun-Soo Kim, LHP Garrett Cleavinger and global bonus money.

Less than 30 minutes before the first pitch, the Phillies announced scheduled starter Jeremy Hellickson was scratched but did not disclose a trade or injury.

In exchange, the Orioles sent outfielder Hyun Soo Kim, minor league reliever Garrett Cleavinger and global signing bonus money to the Phillies. "He should provide some quality innings for the Orioles". He made 10 starts for the Phillies at the end of the 2016 season, posting a 3-6 record with a 5.70 ERA. He was first traded exactly a year to the date in November 2014, when the Rays sent him to Arizona.

He returned to Philadelphia this offseason on the one-year qualifying offer, accepting a $17.2 million salary for 2017, rather than sign a long-term deal in free agency.

He'll join an Orioles rotation that has failed to get firing in any meaningful way this year. He owns a career record of 67-63 with a 3.98 ERA. On Friday he allowed five hits while striking out five and walking two.

At the same time, Mackanin said, "He's not the same hitter he was a year ago".

Rupp followed Altherr's first homer of the night with his 10th, the fourth time this season the Phils have gone back to back.

But before long, he became a popular figure on the team, with his selective approach endearing him to fans who thought the Orioles needed more on-base capability.

Thompson did have previous experience as a major league starter.

But the late-spring transition of rookie Trey Mancini to the outfield, first as a right-handed platoon bat and eventually as an everyday player, ultimately led to Kim being phased out. He was batting.232/.305/.288 in 56 games. Both of Rodriguez's homers have come as a pinch hitter.
