The former One Directioner turned soloist has spoken about how his personal mental health issues have caused him to shy away from performing on stage in front of doting fans. 'I'm not a very outgoing social person in terms of a big group of people, ' he said in behind-the-scenes footage from his US Vogue cover shoot with girlfriend Gigi Hadid, 22.

Zayn, 24, explained he felt "like I'm trying to work through whatever certain issues are around certain subjects". It's been a year since I properly showed my face'.

"He added: "'I'm not always trying to be pretentious or say something that is going to change the world, I feel like I'm one voice among millions".

"You know when we're getting ready to put the second album out, people are going to start seeing me a bit more", he finished.

Meanwhile, Zayn also recently confessed that when he first moved to LA, he slept on just a mattress for six months because he liked the way it felt.

Speaking in a video uploaded to Vogue magazine's YouTube channel on Wednesday (26.07.17), Zayn said: "The comic books I had when I was a kid, they were in a safe somewhere and they just had like cobwebs and stuff on them, so we just chose to take them out and put them in the coffee table and they look really cool".

No four poster bed, no Egyptian cotton sheets, nothing.

"When I first moved here, I was sleeping on a mattress for six months", he said.

'Like [it was] minimalistic, and simple, there was nothing really to hold on to. "And I'd just moved out of my London pad which had a lot of stuff in it".
