A man has doused himself in petrol and set himself alight in a self harm incident outside the Department of Immigration and Border Protection offices in the Sydney CBD.

Police were called to Lee Street in Haymarket shortly after 1.30pm on Friday where they attended to a male, believed to be in his thirties.

Donohue said the man was "deeply disturbed and upset" and "would have killed himself" if police had not doused him with a fire extinguisher.

Officers attempted to speak with the man for about eight to 10 minutes before he proceeded to light himself on fire. Fire & Rescue NSW then doused the man in water.

He is being treated for superficial burns to his thighs and his mental health is being assessed in hospital, the Guardian quoted Donohue as saying.

The man is now in hospital and is being assessed for both his injuries and his health condition.
