Family wiped out: Lindsey Schmidt, 29, from Beecher, Illinois, (left) and her 21-month-old son, Kaleb, (top right) were killed in a auto accident after a pickup truck ran a stop sign.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office said Owen Schmidt was pronounced dead at 2:39 Comer Children's Hospital in Chicago. The woman was four months pregnant with her fourth child at the time of the collision. Investigators are trying to determine if the driver should face charges and will examine his cellphone to determine if he was texting when the crash occurred, Will County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said.

The Sheriff's Office confirmed Tuesday that the mother, Lindsey Schmidt, was pregnant at the time of her death. Both children were transferred to Comer's Children Hospital where they are now on life-support.

The 25-year-old man driving the pickup suffered minor injuries and was taken to St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights, police said. He was transferred to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn to undergo minor reconstruction surgery where he is being treated for a large cut to his arm. The driver of the truck was issued a traffic citation. The driver's name hasn't been released.
