After raking in more than $780 million worldwide, Warner Bros. has scheduled the Gal Gadot-led superhero sequel for December 13, 2019, studio spokesman Jack Horner confirmed to USA TODAY.

Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins, has been a monster hit for the studio with $389 million (Dh1.42 billion) in domestic grosses after 53 days, and another $390 million from global markets.

While Warner has announced the film will hit U.S. theatres on 13 December 2019, it has not yet confirmed whether director Patty Jenkins will remain at the helm.

Gal Gadot is already contracted for the sequel, and talks with director Patty Jenkins are described as "ongoing" by The Hollywood Reporter.

"The story will take place in the USA, which I think is right", Jenkins told Entertainment Weekly in April. There could be one more film that hits theatres before Wonder Woman 2, possibly Shazam, but nothing is official.

Johns also added how he "had a blast" working with Jenkins on Wonder Woman and that they are already working on a "cool idea" for the sequel.

Boasting a 92% fresh rating on aggregate review site Rotten Tomatoes, the first film has become a cash cow for Warner Bros., bypassing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to become the biggest hit of the summer.

Gadot will reprise her role in November's Justice League.

Wonder Woman is the fourth instalment in the studio's DC Extended Universe, which launched with 2013's Man of Steel with an opening weekend of US$116.6 million, followed by last year's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with US$166 million, and Suicide Squad with US$133.6 million. On top of that, its domestic gross is now at $389 million, which surpasses DC's own Man of Steel, Suicide Squad, and Batman v Superman. It's the second-highest-grossing 2017 title after Beauty and the Beast. Nevertheless, Jenkins is now in negotiations to return for the sequel, which is great news, as she's already stated that she's written some early treatments, including a time and a place.
