The man was subsequently detained, Spanish Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido tweeted, without indicating whether the assault - which took place early on Tuesday - was a terror attack or not.

He reportedly stabbed an officer at the border crossing of Beni Eznar around 7.35am local time.

A knife-wielding man charged across the border between Morocco and the Spanish territory of Melilla on Tuesday (Jul 25), attacking and injuring a police officer, authorities said.

He said: 'The police have arrested a man who attacked with a knife agents at the border crossing of Beni Ansar'.

Police have arrested a suspect, a Moroccan man, following the incident.

Melilla, a small autonomous city located next to Morocco's northeastern coast, is one of two Spanish enclaves in northern Africa.

This is a developing story, more to follow.
