Clint Dempsey is now level with Landon Donovan for the all-time record for USA national team goals with 57.

Clint Dempsey tied Landon Donovan's United States men's national team goal-scoring record Saturday night with a free kick in the 82nd minute that handed his side a 2-0 Gold Cup semifinal win over Costa Rica. He quickly made his presence felt with an assist to Jozy Altidore.

The game turned when USA coach Bruce Arena brought in Dempsey as a substitute midway through the second half, and the 34-year-old set up Jozy Altidore for the breakthrough goal before adding his second from a free kick.

Dempsey reached the mark in just 136 games, while it took Donovan 157 games to reach 57 goals.

The goal comes for Dempsey, who was only added to the US squad for the knockout rounds, as the national team tries to win its sixth Gold Cup and the first since 2013.

Dempsey will try to make a similar impact Wednesday when the United States returns to the pitch seeking its second Gold Cup title in the last four years against the victor of Sunday's semifinal between Mexico and Jamaica. Donovan also scored 15 goals from the penalty spot.

Dempsey was cleared to play earlier this year, and it didn't take long for Bruce Arena to reunite him with the lineup.
