"The Duke and Duchess are exceptionally satisfied to share this stunning picture as they observe Prince George's fourth birthday celebration, and might want to thank everybody for the greater part of the kind messages they have gotten", Kensington Palace said.

Adorable! Prince George hits the tarmac with a helicopter inspection in his sights!

Mr Jackson said: "I'm thrilled and honoured that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have chosen to release this portrait to celebrate Prince George's fourth birthday".

Meanwhile, Prince George is probably pleased his precocious little sister has been pulling the public spotlight her way during the royal tour.

The photo, taken at Kensington Palace in June, oozes the fun charm of a happy little three-year-old.

It is the first formal portrait taken of William and Kate's son, who on previous birthdays have often released photographs Kate has taken herself.

The sweet picture of the princess was taken by her mother, a keen photographer, at their home in rural Norfolk, Anmer Hall. Here, he is perched on the means of a yard at Kensington Palace in November 2014.

Both children were born at St Mary's Hospital in London.

It's been a busy week for Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.

The treat for the children came as their parents' five-day tour of Poland and Germany came to an end with a visit to aircraft manufacturer Airbus's sprawling plant.
