'Take cover now': Weather service warns of tornado in Western New York

Erie County Executive Mark Polancarz issued a travel advisory for the Towns of Aurora, Hamburg and Orchard Park because of the storm, warning that there's extensive damage over a wide swath of southern Erie County.

"At 12:45 p.m.m EDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Colden, or near East Aurora, moving east at 40 miles per hour", the National Weather Service said.

UPDATE 12:57 p.m.: The National Weather Service has extended the tornado warning until 1:30 p.m.

"Flying debris will be unsafe to those caught without shelter". Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur.

For those that need to travel on Route 16, Erie County Sheriff Howard offered the following detour route: Heading Southbound: Right onto Emery Road; Left onto Center Road; Right onto Holland Glenwood Road; Right onto Route 16. "Tree damage is likely." the weather service sdaid.
