The protest, "Kisan Mukti Sansad", was culmination of the farmers" agitation of "Kisan Mukti Yatra' launched on July 6 from Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh, where six farmers were allegedly killed in police firing on June 6, by the peasants' bodies.

After meeting with the Chief Minister on June 4, farmers of the area were satisfied with the increased procurement price offered by the government and had called off their agitation, he said.

Reacting to the charges made by ruling BJP members, Jitu Patwari of the Congress, who was caught on camera trying to instigate violence after the Mandsaur incident, demanded the chief minister and home minister's resignation.

He said farmers suicides could be checked only by increasing their income and the government was taking necessary steps, including increase in budgetary allocations to the agriculture sector.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi, if you had implemented what you had promised the farmers of the country by now, at least of half of these children on the stage would have had their fathers alive", said Raju Shetti, MP and founder of Swabhimani Shetkari Saghtana.

Tomar, who hails from Madhya Pradesh, said the government of the state is very sensitive towards farmers and has done a lot for their income upliftment.

He said a premium of Rs 3,560 crore was paid under the crop insurance scheme and Rs 3,548 crore distributed as insurance claims to farmers.

He observed that since agriculture is a vast area, results are visible only over a period of time.

The Minister said the Bharatiya Janata Party had promised Minimum Support Price (MSP) for agricultural produce to be 1.5 times the input cost to farmers before the 2014 general elections.

Although PMFBY has been tweaked, it requires further improvement, Mahtab said, adding that there is a need to make insurance companies accountable for three years. "In 2015, the number was 12,602", he said in his reply after a discussion in the Lok Sabha on the agrarian crisis.
