A young girl was reportedly killed after she was mauled by a lion after going outside to go to the bathroom.

Little Mitchell Mucheni had gone outside with her aunt Mawonei Muchacha at about 7pm on Saturday when the big cat struck, state-linked newspaper Chronicle reports.

Assistant Inspector Kudakwashe Dehwa told the Chronicle: 'We have received reports of a sudden death.

She had been waiting at the front of the hut while her niece went behind to go to the toilet. The girl had gone behind their house during the night to relieve herself when she met her fate.

However, she was bitten and dragged 300 metres after a lion pounced from a bush nearby. "She was allegedly attacked and her body dragged for 300 meters before the lion disappeared".

Conflict between humans and animals is common in this south-eastern part of Zimbabwe.

The incident was reported to the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks). In 2015, a 14-year-old boy was killed by a lion as he guarded his family's maize field from elephants in Kanyemba, Zimbabwe, according to News24.
