Yankees Trade Rumors: Yonder Alonso Talks with Athletics Reported

In the report, Morosi wrote that "it remains unclear whether the Yankees have greater interest in Oakland right-hander Sonny Gray or first baseman Yonder Alonso".

Now that first baseman Greg Bird is out for at least the next six weeks, the New York Yankees are surely in the market for a stopgap option at that position.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported on Monday that the Athletics had a top-level scout present to watch the Yankees' Class-A Charleston affiliate, where top Yankees prospect Blake Rutherford is playing.

He is set to hit free agency during the offseason, however, making him an ideal trade chip for an A's team in the midst of a rebuild.

Both players could be useful additions to the Yankees roster, as NY has struggled to find consistent production at first base, while right-hander Michael Pineda was placed on the 60-day disabled list after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Adding a player with pop like Alonso should help boost a slumping Yankees lineup that has tallied the second-fewest runs in the American League this month. He's had a splendid season in Oakland, posting a.268 average and.366 on-base percentage to go with 21 homers and 44 RBI.
