For the second time in less than a month, Portage la Prairie was the scene of an armed standoff with Portage RCMP calling on outside resources to handle a potentially deadly weapons-related offence.

RCMP spokeswoman Tara Seel said the emergency response team was called to the community early Tuesday morning.

RCMP said there were four people inside the home with an unknown number of firearms.

That prompted police to deploy tear gas which caused two female residents - ages 25 and 16 - to exit the home. The two women were arrested, but are now considered witnesses and possibly victims. Two men remained in the house and barricaded themselves further.

All four people were treated for minor injuries, and no officers were injured, RCMP said. RCMP had been investigating the reported theft.

A vehicle with a similar description was also at the scene of a gas station theft on the Trans-Canada Highway early Monday morning.

"The RCMP thanks the public for their cooperation in staying clear of the area while the events of this morning took place", Cst. At a police press conference in Portage, RCMP Const. Sean O'Keefe did not elaborate if the women were at one time hostages.
