Al Gore takes on climate change and the Electoral College

The film, about the looming threat of climate change, is a sequel to his Academy Award-winning film An Inconvenient Truth and had been met with accolades at the Cannes Film Festival a week before.

The former vice president initially anxious that Trump's decision to withdraw the United States from the worldwide agreement would be "disastrous", but he was excited by the response of political leaders in the country.

Trump pulled the USA from the historic pact between 196 countries, made to encourage the worldwide adoption of green energy sources, to cut down on pollution, to limit the spike in global temperatures, and to cope with the results of unavoidable climate change.

"We've never had a president who's deliberately made decisions, the effect of which is to tear down America's standing in the world, starting with his withdrawal from the Paris agreement", Gore told Today.

Later that evening, Gore reflected on his private conversation with Trump about the Paris accord during an interview on CBS' "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert". "Everything that's coming out now has to be seen in that context", said Gore. "I thought he would stay in the global agreement, but I was wrong", Gore admitted.

"In the US, emission levels are determined far more by cities, states, and businesses than they are by our federal government - and each of these groups is taking action because it's in their own best interest", said Michael Bloomberg.

"A lot of our most important governors and mayors and business leaders said, 'We're still in the Paris agreement, and we're going to meet the commitments of the country", said Gore. "It was a honest search for areas of common ground".

Al Gore made the comment during a television show on Monday night, recounting the details of his meeting with Trump after last year's election to discuss climate change and the landmark Paris accord, which the Republican candidate had promised to pull out of during his presidential campaign.
