Information and Broadcasting minister Venkaiah Naidu was today picked as BJP-led NDA's Vice-Presidential candidate.

Naidu was chosen at the BJP parliamentary board meeting here attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior party leaders.

Venkaiah Naidu being offered candies by his wife at home, after he was announced as the NDA's Vice-Presidential candidate in New Delhi on Monday.

Naidu is now managing Information & Broadcasting, Urban Development and Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation ministry.

Opposition's Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates Meira Kumar and Gopalkrishna Gandhi, will hold an interactive session with the parliamentarians of the 18 non-NDA parties on Sunday, said informed sources.

The electoral college for the August 5 election consists of 790 MPs of the two chambers of Parliament. The opposition camp has already declared their candidacy for the election.

Naidu will file his nomination on Tuesday at 11 AM, Shah said.

Mr Naidu has been the National President of the Party from 2002 to 2004. Mr. Naidu has also closely worked with former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and former Deputy PM and Home Minister L.K. Advani and to some extent has been cast in Vajpayee-Advani mould.

A total of 776 MPs and 4,120 MLAs were eligible to vote.

With the BJP looking to consolidate its base in southern part of the country, it was being speculated that the choice of the party leadership would be someone from that region.

If elected Vice President, Naidu will also be the ex officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha where the BJP still lacks a majority. M Venkaiah Naidu (now Union Urban Development minister) raised Special Status to Andhra Pradesh issue in Rajya Sabha (as opposition member in February 2014) and demanded special category state status to AP. The last date of filing nominations is tomorrow.

Parliamentary Board will meet on Monday evening to pick its vice presidential candidate.

M Venkaiah Naidu inches towards vice presidency.

Moreover, with the BJP government bringing in a host of Bills as Money Bills to bypass Rajya Sabha where they do not have enough numbers, it seems having a favourable head helps the BJP's cause to manage the Upper House better. He has hands full of experience in various departments and he essayed various roles all these years BJP was in power.
