An Australian woman described as a spiritual healer was shot dead by police in Minneapolis Saturday after she reportedly called 911 herself - leaving angry friends and family searching for answers in a city that has just been at the center of another high-profile police shooting.

Causing much confusion at the gathering-and in the community at large-was an admission from police that the officers' body cameras were not turned on at the time, nor did the squad auto cameras capture any video of the incident.

Zach Damond, who identified himself in a Facebook video as the son of the woman's fiance, said she had called police for help after hearing a noise near her house.

"I am heartsick and deeply disturbed by what happened", she posted on Facebook.

Justine, whose maiden name is Ruszczyk, used the name Damond even though the couple were not yet married.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade says it's providing consular support to the family of an Australian woman killed in the US.

The shooting occurred on the 5100 block of Washburn Avenue South in Minneapolis's Fulton neighbourhood.

"Due to our privacy obligations we will not provide further information", the DFAT statement said. He said officers arrived at the address and when it became a shooting he alerted the BCA, which now leads the investigation.

"She was committed to love and the relationship that was there for her. I'm so done with all this violence", he said.

"So it's hard for me to wrap my head around why this would happen to her."

Justine taught yoga and meditation, and also ran Tuesday night classes on meditation for the Lake Harriet Spiritual Community in Minnesota, which claims itself to be a "a center for conscious living", according to their official website.

"Basically, my mom's dead because a police officer shot her for reasons I don't know", the newspaper quoted him as saying.

She lived in the area with her fiancé and son, teaching meditation classes that her students say never failed to bring a little bit of joy into their day.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy and release details, including the victim's name and the cause and manner of her death.

"Justine was all about love, just bringing your biggest heart forward, no matter what you're doing in life", said Drake.

As the news of the shooting spread, women activists in Minnesota held vigils in Justine's memory July 16 and demanded proper investigation into the incident. "I call on the BCA to share as much information with all of us as quickly as they can".

"I know everyone thinks this when a loved one goes in any kind of manner but she was seriously one of the most attractive people that has ever walked the face of the planet", King said.
