"If we do get into a situation where an evacuation order is required, we certainly would not be encouraging folks to head south on that route", he said, "but there is a procedure right now to come south from that point through the emergency operation centre through Williams Lake".

Williams Lake was issued an Evacuation Alert earlier in the week.

Wildfires across British Columbia have torn through several communities, but officials say the number of homes, businesses and other structures lost remains unclear. However windy conditions Saturday fuelled the flames and led to the Evacuation Order. "Residents in these areas who are unable to self-evacuate must make their way to a muster point in the City immediately as buses departing the City can not wait indefinitely", a news release said Saturday evening. The alert covers the entire District of Clearwater with the exception of the Canfor Vavenby mill site and the Yellowhead Mines property. It's: "'okay, let's go, let's get our computers.' We were probably out of the house in 15 minutes". I was seeing if they would change their mind but I don't think so.

Residents are encouraged to prepare to evacuated their premises or property should it be required.

Officials asked individuals in the city to leave immediately and head to Kamloops, almost 300 kilometres southeast of Williams Lake.

Richmond said the resources in Kamloops may be "stretched".

University Hospital of Northern B.C. spokesperson Steve Raper said the city's hospital has opened additional spaces to be able to accept any additional hospitalized patients from the Williams Lake evacuation.

The province isn't likely to get a reprieve from the wildfires ravaging the B.C. interior any time soon, according to the BC Wildfire Service.

An estimated 17,400 evacuees have been forced from their homes, with a bit more than 80 per cent of households receiving their funds through the Canadian Red Cross.

"I am so proud of my community", Mack had said Friday afternoon.

With the rise in evacuees, the provincial government said more volunteers are needed in Kamloops to help the Canadian Disaster Animal Response Team, as well as a 24-hour animal shelter and runners to complete errands.

Evacuees should report to the emergency reception centre at the Sandman Centre in Kamloops.
