Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Sunday urged leaders of the opposition parties to extend their support to Meira Kumar.

Meanwhile, Opposition presidential candidate Meira Kumar and vice-presidential candidate Gopal Krishna Gandhi met MPs belonging to parties supporting their candidature.

The next president will be selected between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) contender Ram Nath Kovind and his main rival Meira Kumar, the nominee of the Congress-led opposition and a Dalit.

The victor will replace Pranab Mukherjee, a political veteran of the main opposition Congress party, who has held the post from 2012. The total number of electors (4120 MLAs and 776 MPs) will be sharing the onus of electing India's next President.

The electoral college has a vote value of 10.98 lakh and comprises 4,896 electors - elected members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha and elected members of Legislative Assemblies of States and Union Territories.

The front-runner is a former state governor and Dalit (formerly untouchable) leader, Ram Nath Kovind. "Unfortunately, no political party in India could do this, although they enjoyed power at the Centre and the states", said NGO coordinator Martin Macwan. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, who are yet to resign from the Lok Sabha, voted in the respective Assemblies. Apart from these legislators, MPs, 23 from BJP, 18 from Sena and one MP from Swabhimani Paksh, will vote for the BJP's nominated candidate.

They said that the seal of ballot boxes will be opened on Aug 20 in the presence of representatives of the two candidates and the observers of the poll panel.

The poll panel has also specifically asked everyone to use only violet ink to cast votes.

Voting Starts:- The successor for Pranab Mukherjee is on and the 14th President will be finalized with the elections that are taking place today.
