Doolittle has a 3.38 earned run average, three saves, and 31 strikeouts in 21.1 innings for the A's this season. Both Doolittle and Madson have a better WHIP than any pitcher in the Nationals bullpen.

However, offensive categories are not the only place where the Nationals lead the major leagues. He has a 5.73 ERA over 37 2/3 innings this season.

Doolittle will immediately become one of the top hurlers out of Washington's bullpen following a trade that saw fellow reliever Ryan Madson head over to the National League as well.

Madson, meanwhile, was also very effective out of the bullpen, going 2-4 with one save and a 2.06 ERA in 40 games. The Montreal Expos/Nationals franchise has never reached the World Series. "They both have had arm problems, so it could be both of them".

In order to acquire players, you must also give up players.

Treinen, who will go to the Athletics in this trade, started the season as Nationals closer but lasted just two weeks in that role before being removed by manager Dusty Baker.

Madson is owed the rest of his $7.5 million for this year and is expected to make $7.5 million next year.

Gennett, who is having a big season after being claimed off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers in late March, is 4-for-8 with a double, three home runs and six RBIs against Strasburg, including 2-for-3 with a double and homer against him in a 6-5, 11-inning loss at Washington on June 23.

Luzardo, 19, was a third-round draft pick in 2016 and is 1-0 with a 1.32 ERA at the Gulf Coast Rookie League Nationals in his return from Tommy John surgery on March 22 a year ago.

It wasn't certain whether the pair would join the Nationals in Cincinnati on Monday or in Anaheim on Tuesday for the opener of a two-game set against the Los Angeles Angels.

That's key. Bryce Harper is under contract through next season, and it's unclear whether he'll re-sign with the Nats once he hits free agency.

Washington right-hander Joe Ross, who is to have Tommy John surgery on Wednesday, was transferred to the 60-day disabled list. In Single-A Hagerstown this season, he has hit.291 with nine homers while typically batting in the heart of the lineup. Oakland selected the contract of right-hander Simon Castro from Triple-A Nashville. The club picked up Sean Doolittle and Ryan Madson in a trade with the Oakland Athletics.

"I know the guys will feel this a little bit but we're on a little bit different course right now", Melvin said.
