A 16-year-old boy is in a critical condition, after a moped collided with a marked police vehicle.

Witnesses described hearing the moped "scraping along the ground" after the crash in Wimbledon, South West London, at 2.15am yesterday.

A second 16-year-old suffered a serious injury to his leg and a 15-year-old sustained minor injuries.

Two large knives were also recovered.

"Three males who had been riding the moped were taken to a south London hospital for treatment to their injuries".

At about 2.15am this morning (July 16), a moped and marked police auto collided in South Park Road near the junction with Trinity Road.

A Met Police spokesman added: "The moped was being monitored by the National Police Air Service helicopter at the time of the collision as it was believed to have been involved in an earlier attempted robbery".

A marked police auto was over-taking the three suspects when "the moped was in collision with the rear offside" of the vehicle, the Met said.

The Directorate of Professionals Standards has been informed.
