However, the Red Devils are confident that they can hold off the Spanish giants.

Manchester United's Ander Herrera claims there is no truth in reports linking himself with a move to Barcelona this summer.

However, Manchester United were unable to agree on a fee with Real Madrid and instead switched their attentions towards signing Romelu Lukaku from Everton last week.

United boss Jose Mourinho has confirmed that his side's pursuit of Morata, 24, was over after Real Madrid rejected offers for the striker, seemingly hinting that he considered signing both the Spanish global and Lukaku this summer.

Mata's words come less than 48 hours after manager Jose Mourinho all but admitted defeat in a move. "We've signed an important player in attack and it's hard, although you never know".

"Morata? Of course, I began to see Morata as a teammate, it was very close because the two clubs were in talks".

"Too bad he is not with us, but I wish him well".

It had been suggested that Real had requested goalkeeper David de Gea in any deal for Morata, though Herrera says he will do everything he can to get his compatriot to remain at Old Trafford.

The German worldwide has become one of the best central midfielders in the world since joining Madrid from Bayern Munich in 2014, and Mourinho has made no secret of his admiration for the 27-year-old.

"I believe [De Gea] is going to stay [at United]", Mata said.

"It is a right of Madrid to ask for their players the amount they want".

"We have had interest (in Morata)".

Both the Premier League clubs reportedly had offers of around £70m rejected, and were put off by the high price-tag.
