The Yankees won Game 1 of their doubleheader with the Red Sox on Sunday, but things didn't go as well for NY in the nightcap.

NY had not won back-to-back games since a season-high, six-game spurt from June 7-12, going 7-19 before winning Saturday and in the first game Sunday.

With the win, the first-place Red Sox moved three games ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays and 3 1/2 ahead of the Yankees in the American League East.

Garrett Cooper, who made his major league debut for the Yankees on Friday, doubled in the fifth for his first major league hit. He made it 3-0 when he singled to lead off the sixth, took second on an error by second baseman Starlin Castro, third on a groundout and scored on Dustin Pedroia's second hit of the game.

Didi Gregorius doubled with one out in the ninth and Kimbrel walked pinch hitter Brett Gardner after a fly out to bring up another pinch hitter in Chase Headley, who struck out to end the game.

Sabathia (8-3) made his second start since a stint on the disabled list (strained left hamstring).

Gregorius' homer was his 11th of the season.

"It's been a long, long time", manager Joe Girardi said. While a Red Sox fan initially came up with the foul ball, he turned and handed the souvenir to a young Yankees fan. "It allows me to use the whole roster". Aroldis Chapman tossed a one-hit ninth for his ninth save.

With a runner on and the Yankees down by three runs in the eighth inning, Judge drove a 95 miles per hour fastball from David Price to the deepest corner of Fenway. Torreyes followed with an RBI single in the next at-bat to make it 2-0.

NOTES: New York RHP Bryan Mitchell and Boston INF/OF Brock Holt were the 26th men for Sunday's doubleheader. However, the shortest home run distance to right at Fenway Park is listed as 302 feet. It was the shortest non-inside-the-park homer Statcast has tracked in the last three seasons. "If it goes unaddressed ... who's to say (you) can't instruct runners to do the same going forward", Farrell said.
