These are the latest in a series of nearly weekly attacks in Maiduguri, months after authorities said the insurgent Boko Haram had been defeated.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The blast was confirmed by the head of the Borno state emergency agency, Ahmed Satomi, who stated that the explosion occurred at the London Ciki Area of the town.

NAN learnt that the residents of the area had tried to apprehend the suicide bomber who was looking suspicious, but she ran into the mosque and detonated the explosive strapped on her body.

A witness, Grema Bana, said that the incident occurred at about 4:45 p.m., at one of the pastoralist hamlets in the area.

Boko Haram has continued to deploy suicide bombers across the northeast especially in Maiduguri, where it had long perpetrated its most devastating attacks.

A check shows that the frequency of suicide bombing in Maiduguri, especially at the University of Maiduguri and environs since decimation of Boko Haram is becoming worrisome.

PREMIUM TIMES learnt that about four other persons were killed in a separate attack in another location in Maiduguri.

The bomb later exploded killing Gambo Bukar, while his friend, Umar Bukar sustained injuries and was hospitalized.

"Another antic is by abducting children who are on errands, strapping them with suicide vests and sending them back home, where the suicide bomb detonates to kill members of the household".
