Government Vow To Press Ahead With Water Charges Refunds

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has promised that almost one million households in Ireland will be refunded for paying Water Charges.

Nearly a million households who paid their water charges can expect to get their money back this Autumn.

Although it is not yet known how the refunds will be issued its is believed the Government will spend over €170m to pay back those who paid their charges before they were formally scrapped.

The confirmation comes following comments made by An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar in an interview with The Sunday Independent.

He said the repayments will not be part of the upcoming Budget, with refunds to begin before the budgetary measures are announced in October.

Government sources confirmed this, saying that the majority of refunds should be processed by the end of the year.

He said he is in conversation with Irish Water on the process of getting that done. "But we intend to do it in the autumn". "It's not going to be a Budget announcement".
