But to her shock and that of eye doctors, it was revealed that 27 contact lenses were found lodged in the patient's eye.

Rupal Morjaria, specialist trainee ophthalmologist who dealt with the case at Solihull Hospital in the United Kingdom said that "none of us have ever seen this before".

After finding 17 contact lenses glued together in her eye, the doctors put the woman under further examination. "Today, while it is easier to order contact lenses online, the patients are far more lax about the monitoring visits, she said".

"None of us has ever seen this before", Morjaria said. It was such a large mass.

In a freaky medical case, a British woman somehow had more than two dozen contact lenses in one eye but didn't realize it.

According to the report, the woman's operation has been postponed as the risk of developing "endophthalmitis" - an inflammation of the interior of the eye - increased dramatically.

"Because she had harboured these contact lenses in her eye for an unknown length of time, if we had operated, she would have had a lot of bacteria around her conjunctiva", explained Morjaria.

The pensioner, 67, was completely unaware that the lenses were missing and told surgeons she thought the discomfort was simply down to her old age.

Contact lenses, when kept in the eyes for too long or placed without cleaning, are prone to infections and other conditions.

Specialist trainee ophthalmologist Rupal Morjaria said the team were startled by the discovery.

"Contact lenses are used all the time", said Morjaria.

Morjaria said she decided to make the case public to raise awareness of the importance of regular check-ups with optometrists.

Dr. Morjaria wrote that this case highlights how important it is to monitor people who wear contact lenses on a regular basis.

This highlights the importance of selecting appropriate patients for the use of contact lenses and monitoring contact lens wearers, it added.
