Police have charged a transport truck driver in a fiery crash that shut down a section of Highway 401 south of Chatham for several hours.

The Ontario Provincial Police say on Thursday around 5:30pm, the driver of the tractor trailer lost control in the westbound lanes in the construction zone near Hwy. 40, and struck the north side cement barrier, which caused it to bounce off and strike the centre barrier. The collision pushed the centre barrier into the eastbound lanes and the tractor-trailer caught on fire.

Just before 9 p.m. the eastbound lanes of the highway were reopened, however the westbound lanes were expected to remain closed at Kent Bridge Road overnight for highway repairs.

The man has been charged with careless driving.
