Candolim woman mentally stable, police arrest her family

A woman in Goa was locked away in a dark room for 20 years after she returned on discovering that the man she married already had a wife.

A team of women officers successfully rescued a woman locked in a room for past two decades by her own brothers due to her "abnormal behavior". She was being served food and water through a window. The Goa police has rescued the woman and arrested four members of the family.

A non-profit organization working for the women's rights named "Bailancho Saad" informed the police about the room. According to police, the victim was married however owing to some discord she returned from Mumbai to her maternal house in Goa.

Her family reportedly locked her in the room because they believed she was acting strangely. Her only link with the world outside the room she was confined in was a small window.

"She would insist on not wearing any clothes". Deputy sarpanch of Candolim Alma Sequeira said the woman was her classmate in St Thereza High School in Candolim and they passed SSC together adding, she was an average student.

The investigation is still at the preliminary stage.

Now, the woman has been sent for medical examination and admitted to the Panaji-based Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour. Asked if any arrests were made, the PI said it would be decided during the course of the investigation.

The police said that with the document produced by the family, a senior doctor at the IPHB will now trace her medical records and treat her accordingly.

An offence has been booked under Section 342 (wrongful confinement) of the Indian Penal Code, police said.
