A News app with Podcasts and Bixby Voice

When released, Google Assistant is expected to compete with Samsung's Bixby and other similar services developed by online firms and telecom carriers. There is support for Bixby Voice which means that users can also use their voice to ask the app to play a particular podcast and control it. The app will not only provide the latest news articles, but it will also apparently be able to provide users with podcasts.

Samsung's next big thing, the Galaxy Note 8, is set for an official introduction on 23 August. Apple and Google already have their own respective news apps, so it isn't really all that surprising that Samsung wants to do the same. Samsung's smart speaker is said to be now codenamed as "Vega".

Samsung Bixby could finally be finding its voice next week, if a leak on Reddit is anything to go by.

As of now, this is all we have got on the rumoured News Today app. It remains unclear whether it would replace or supplement the existing Flipboard/UPDAY apps that ship as part of the news section on most Samsung devices.

There's no confirmation yet on the existence of Samsung's News Today app, so everyone should take this rumor with a grain of salt. The Reddit post from user Bixbyguy shows a screenshot of an email claiming that the Bixby voice launch will be on July 18. Bixby Voice integration may well be News Today's secret weapon that helps differentiate it from competing apps, and could even wind up being the conduit through which Bixby expands onto non-Galaxy smartphones and tablets, if Samsung chooses to pursue such an avenue. If true, the company's upcoming news application will be called News Today.
