Police investigating the death of a three-year-old boy in Dublin have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

A three-year-old boy was found stabbed at an apartment in Poddle Park in Kimmage yesterday evening.

He said the apartment in which the child's death occurred was in a quiet residential complex where there "were never any problems".

"The woman is described as a medic of Iranian decent and is believed to be in her 40s". It is understood she also suffered knife wounds.

A woman, aged in her early 40s, was also injured and was last night in a serious condition at St James' Hospital.

Independent.ie reports the discovery was made when Gardaí were called to a house in Poddle Park.

The state pathologist has been notified.

The scene remains sealed off this morning and forensic examinations are taking place.

An incident room has been set up in Crumlin and gardaí are conducting inquiries in the area.

"They are really shocked, in disbelief", he said.

'They were bringing flowers and candles and teddy bears. It's just that it's a three-year-old kid.

A resident of Riverside apartments who did not want to be named said he had met the mother in the apartment complex a few times, and that she told him she was a doctor from Iraq.

"She settled very well".

On Monday night, Lorraine Leon, who lives opposite the apartment block, said she would walk with the woman and the baby to the local shops.

"The whole conversation that day all she talked about was him".
