The medical examiner will conduct autopsies to determine how they died; it's not clear if investigators believed their asthma histories contributed to their deaths.

A 2-year-old Bronx girl and her 3-year-old brother died early Monday after having trouble breathing, police said. Both deaths were ruled homicides.

Micha's cause of death is still being investigated, sources said.

City 911 operators instructed the mother and her boyfriend to perform CPR on the children before cops arrived, but police sources say the CPR should not have caused the stomach trauma found by the autopsy.

The toddlers were rushed to Montefiore Medical Center where both later died.

The children's mother and her boyfriend were both being questioned, after Olivia and Micha died.

The children's grandmother is the director of education for the co-op, Mr. Zsebedics said.

A law enforcement source familiar with the investigation told NBC 4 New York Monday the boyfriend had been cooperating with police.

The siblings lived in an apartment at Amalgamated Houses, a tight-knit co-op community, according to people who live there. "She has a lot of support from my staff who are with her".

He described the kids as "angelic and happy", and said relatives are asking for privacy as they grieve.
