The pair were being moved early Tuesday morning in a routine transfer when they escaped from the caged back area of the prison bus, overpowered and disarmed the two corrections officers responsible for driving, and fatally shot them, the authorities said.

Donnie Russell Rowe, 43, and Ricky Dubose, 24, were caught on Thursday in Christiana, Tennessee, after taking an elderly couple hostage in their home, police claim.

Two inmates accused of escaping from a prison transport bus and killing two corrections officers are back behind bars.

Georgia governor Nathan Deal applauded the "tireless efforts" of law enforcement but also turned his thoughts to the families of the two officers, saying their pain remains. Both were convicted of armed robbery and other violent crimes.

The fugitives initially tried to force the woman to drive them away, but when one of the couple's vehicles wouldn't start, the men stole the another one and left on their own, Swing said. He said the two then carjacked a driver who pulled up behind the bus and fled in his Honda Civic down state Highway 16 in Putnam County, southeast of Atlanta.

Rowe and Dubose then crashed and fled on foot, Goodwin said.

Meanwhile, Sills appealed for the public to help locate the truck and the fugitives, and to call 911 immediately if they spot them. They and the other prisoners were being transported Tuesday to the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison, some 45 miles west of Eatonton.

It was a bittersweet day for local law enforcement, who are thankful none of their officers were harmed, but deeply saddened by the deaths of Georgia Corrections Officers Christopher Monica and Curtis Billue. The two prisoners "went through the gate", Sills said.

Sills said the inmates broke into a home on Cox Road in Morgan County right after their escape and ransacked it before stealing some food and clothes.

"Our hope is that they will be located and apprehended without further injury to anyone", Jones said.

"They wrestled with the man and got control of him and threatened both of their lives", Swing said.

GBI Director Vernon Keenan said Dubose and Rowe walked out of the woods with their hands up and told the homeowner "they wanted to give up because the police had them surrounded".

Local authorities said the hero residents, who held the escapees at gunpoint, were very courageous.

"We will do everything in our power to support their loved ones, and we will not forget their sacrifice and service", Deal said.

According to Lt. Miller of the Tennessee Highway Patrol two suspects, believed to be DuBose and Rowe, were arrested trying to carjack a second vehicle off of exit 89.

A 10-mile chase ensued on Interstate 24 south of Nashville when law enforcement officers saw the stolen vehicle.

Sills said a reward had climbed to $130,000 for information that led to their arrests, and officials warned that anyone helping the inmates would be prosecuted.

The inmates have been cellmates a few times in Georgia's prisons, had known each other for "quite a while" and may have planned the escape together, Department of Corrections Assistant Commissioner Ricky Myrick said. Both officers worked at Baldwin State Prison, according to the GDC.
