Artemis skipper falls overboard in Cup challenger finals

Outteridge slipped and flew off the boat as the crew changed sides while the 50-foot foiling catamaran was turning while going about 27 knots.

In the second race, a flawless Swedish performance handed them a 15-second victory, before Outteridge's third-race blunder put Team New Zealand on the ascendancy. Down to five crewmen, Artemis eased up.

The Kiwi helmsman claimed a 2-1 lead in the Challengers Series finals after Artemis lost their skipper to Bermuda's Great Sound.

"Before Nath went off it was shaping up to be a really close top mark", said Burling, himself an Olympic gold and silver medalist who went head-to-head with Outteridge in the London and Rio Games.

Outteridge had outsmarted his long-standing rival Peter Burling at the start and the crew of six elite sailors managed to fend off New Zealand's repeated attempts to pass them.

In the first race Burling was able to climb back courtesy of two Artemis errors - a miss-timed tack and a penalty for the for crossing the boundary line.

The pair were locked one-all going into the last race, and Team New Zealand was on the charge from behind when disaster struck the Swedish team.

The next day's racing was postponed by high winds, and the Kiwis returned to the water on Thursday to eliminate Britain's Land Rover BAR and clinch a spot in the finals.

But in the last race, when they also made the better start, the loss of Outteridge overboard threw the crew and they were unable to get back up to speed and conceded defeat.

The AC50 boats have very few appendages, as they are designed with aerodynamics in mind, which left Outteridge with nothing to grab on to as he fell off.

Artemis look the likely opponent after sweeping Japan in all three races today to take a 4-3 lead.

Burling said he had done the same thing during practices in the past.
