Sega Forever Let's You Take the Classics On the Go

The verdict? Well, opening the pack to discover a free gift inside certainly took us back to our childhood, although for additional nostalgia points Sega really should have placed the Mega Drive keyring inside the cereal bag itself, as was the norm back in the day.

Having already been made available in numerous formats either individually or, more frequently, as part of packaged collections, each Sega Forever title is free, with revenue derived from ads. "Everything as far back as the SG 1000 Mark I through to Master System, Game Gear, Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast".

Best of all, it will be free to play, but will come with ads which will show up before you start playing the game. The first five Sega Forever games are from the Genesis era - including Sonic the Hedgehog, Comix Zone, Altered Beast, Kid Chameleon, and Phantasy Star II.

It's a smart move by Sega, and considering how successful Super Mario Run was for Nintendo, it makes sense that they're moving towards mobile games. The list of games is relatively short, but will soon include almost every SEGA game ever released from every console era - Master System, Genesis/Mega Drive, Dreamcast, and more. Players will also have the ability to sync their games online and there will be an online leaderboard as well.

Honestly, I'm grinning from ear to ear right now. It promises to breathe new life into some fantastic and fondly remembered games while also attracting an entirely new generation smartphone gamers to its vast portfolio of classic titles.

The all new initiative by Sega has been named Sega Forever.
