Santos made four changes to the team that had to swallow a last-minute 2-2 equalizer against Mexico while Russia's Stanislav Cherchesov brought on two new faces in defender Roman Shishkin and Ruslan Kambolov after an opening 2-0 over New Zealand.

It eliminated the Oceania champions with one game left.

The forward said Portugal were worthy winners after surviving a second-half Russian fight-back.

"The situation in which Carlos Salcedo was left on the ground gave them a goal-scoring chance".

The 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup Group A match between New Zealand and Portugal will be played at Saint Petersburg Stadium and kicks off at 17:00 CEST on Saturday 24 June 2017.

Mexico's coach has questioned the sportsmanship of New Zealand after their testy clash at the Confederations Cup.

Wood's shock first-half goal for New Zealand was cancelled out by Raul Jimenez before Oribe Peralta notched a 72nd-minute victor.

With the Confederations Cup in full swing over in Russia, New Zealand took on Mexico in Sochi on Wednesday night, having lost 2-0 to Russia over the weekend.

"I thought it was weird really, it was like we had elbowed the player the way it was going on", he said.

Hudson assessed the performance as "deeply disappointing" but "incredible" all at the same time. "We're sad about that, and let's see what the exam results tell us".

The Central American side continue to press forward and their superiority was visible to all but as the New Zealanders looked to hold out, El Tri became bolder in their attacks.

With the Kiwis' tails up, Wood could have grabbed a second when he again got in behind the defence, but failed to control the ball as they took a one-goal lead into the break.

Javier Aquino dribbled in from the left and after an exchange of passes on the edge of the New Zealand box, Jimenez spun to fire high into the net.

At the other end, Wood squandered a one-on-one with Talavera and moments later Mexico were level. Javier Aquino and Marco Fabian combined to set up Raul Jimenez to strike on the turn into the top corner.

And Peralta hit the victor in the 72nd minute when Aquino pulled the ball back for the 33-year-old to find the net.

The 25-year-old did well to create space for himself throughout the match but muffed two good chances in each half, either through a poor first touch or a mistimed shot.

Referee Bakary Gassama consulted the video assistant referee and Herrera was booked after a delay of over four minutes.
