Govt announces another 30 cities under Smart City Mission

The government on Friday announced the list of 30 cities as smart cities.

Naidu said the 30 smart city projects announced today have proposed total investments of Rs57,393 crore.

Lucknow: With Aligarh, Allahabad and Jhansi making it to Smart City list after the third round of selection on Friday, UP has total seven cities under the mission.

The development brings the long drawn struggle to a conducive end, as there had been initial competition amongst two cities in the state viz a viz Dharamsala (that was previously selected) and Shimla while the names for the smart city was being proposed previously. This includes Rs 46,879 crore for ensuring core infrastructure in the areas identified by citizens for area-based development and Rs 10,514 crore for technology-based solutions for improving governance, service delivery and utilisation of infrastructure.

This will go a long way in the development of infrastructure in the happening city, Tirupur and give impetus to its vibrancy, TEA president, Raja M Shanmugham said, in a statement.

Out of the fourth list released by the centre today, three cities from the Northeast made it to the list and they are - Aizawl in Mizoram, Gangtok in Sikkim and Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh.

After selecting the agency for undertaking this assessment next month, data collection will be completed in the next about six months, Naidu said.

Naidu made the announcement on the second anniversary of the launch of Narendra Modi government's Smart Cities Mission. With this, the aggregate number of such urban areas have run up to 90 with an aggregate speculation of Rs 1,91,155 crore.

Shillong city, one of the oldest cities in the Northeastern region of the country has once again failed to make it to the Smart City List, for the fourth time. He said that the officers of the state Housing and Urban Development Department also contributed in properly projecting the case of the state before the central government.
