But the focus shifted after Scalise and four others were injured Wednesday when a gunman fired on the GOP congressional baseball team's early morning practice in Alexandria, Virginia.

Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise remains in critical condition, but his vital signs have "stabilized" two days after being shot during a congressional baseball practice on Wednesday, hospital officials announced Friday.

- The condition of Steve Scalise, the third-ranking House Republican who was shot during a baseball practice last week, was upgraded to serious by a Washington hospital after he had another operation. Brooks said the list was short and the other names he was told of were also GOP congressmen.

Scalise was rushed to MedStar Washington and immediately underwent emergency surgery.

Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, said in a brief interview that Democrats would be reminded of "positions they've taken in the past that are not consistent with their voice for bipartisanship today".

Since then he has had more than one surgery and doctors expect he will continue to have more in the near future.

Scalise remains in critical condition at a hospital near the Capitol and has undergone multiple surgeries. He said it is now hard to predict how long Scalise will need to remain in the hospital but they should have a better idea of that in the coming days.

"He will require additional operations to manage abdominal injuries and other bone injuries", Sava said.

The shooter was an IL man, James Hodgkinson, who had lashed out against President Donald Trump and Republicans over social media. Hodgkinson died after being shot by police.

House Majority Whip Scalise, 51, was shot in the hip by a rifle-welding critic of the president who sprayed bullets on USA lawmakers practising for an annual baseball game in the Washington suburb of Alexandria. "The Scalise family greatly appreciates the outpouring of thoughts and prayers", MedStar Washington Hospital Center said in a statement released on behalf of his kin, reports CNN.

"This game is always an important moment for both parties to come together to support charity, build friendships, and celebrate our national pastime", he said.

He suffered a rifle wound in his left hip that shattered bones, tore organs and caused severe bleeding.

Sava said he told Scalise's family that "I am not declaring victory until he's playing ball in his back yard with his family".

Two Capitol Police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, and House Republican aide Zack Barth, were also injured in the shooting.
