Cavaliers owner, Billups meeting for 2nd time

The meeting took place in Detroit, said the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the talks.

Should Billups, 40, eventually accept the Cavaliers' proposal, he will immediately be under the microscope as the Cavaliers enter a critical season that could determine the future of the franchise.

Billups would also have to navigate the trade market and try to improve the Cavaliers roster for the short term so it's better positioned to compete with the Golden State Warriors should they meet in the NBA Finals for a fourth straight year.

The Cavs are in need of a new front office presence after they parted ways with general manager David Griffin earlier this week, and Billups was rumored to be a possible replacement. It's believed that Billups would take on a different role, perhaps as director of basketball operations.

Billups has no previous experience as an National Basketball Association executive, but he does have a long-standing relationship with Gilbert from their time together in Detroit and he knows the league well. Billups is very close friends with Cavs coach Ty Lue, and the challenge of being objectively critical is - not surprisingly - something to consider.

The Cavs do not have a pick in Thursday's draft after dealing away assets to build around LeBron James, who can become a free agent next summer.

The Cavaliers now do not own a draft pick, but that could change; the team has been involved in numerous talks in recent days.
