Perez happy to have Bale

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has backed Gareth Bale and hinted that he will stay at the club.

"We have a very young team, with great desire and enthusiasm".

The Brazilian's proposed move to Madrid from Santos fell through and in 2013 he ended up singing for Real's fiercest rivals Barcelona.

But Perez has revealed that Neymar was mightily close to playing at the Santiago Bernabeu on a weekly basis, rather than the Nou Camp, and even had a medical with the club before Los Blancos pulled the plug.

He told radio station Onda Cero: "Neymar passed a medical with Madrid. I would have liked to have him, but we haven't contemplated it". We tried for him to come, but we saw at one point that it was not possible and we withdrew'.

Madrid opted to buy Gareth Bale from Tottenham Hotspur for a world record £86 million instead of Neymar.

De Gea could still be used as a makeweight in any deal for Alvaro Morata or Cristiano Ronaldo with the Sunday Times recently claiming that United would discount De Gea's fee by £43m if they were able to get Morata as part of the deal. "People say that I have preferred players, but I've brought them all with the same affection".

"Obviously something has happened, something has affected him, his credibility". I'm sure they will resolve that.

"It's no coincidence that he's in a very important tournament, the Confederations Cup". He just wants to be the best player in the world.

"We've known [Messi] since he's been in the Barca youth team".
