A struggling newborn giraffe in Maryland has received a plasma transfusion from a giraffe in Ohio.

Seattle's newest, tallest baby, born June 20, 2017 at 4:03 a.m.at the Woodland Park Zoo.

"The first 48 hours after birth is the critical time for giraffe calves to get the antibodies from mother's milk, or in our case, the colostrum supplement".

The Maryland Zoo partnered with the Columbus Zoo in OH to obtain the plasma needed to sustain the new giraffe's life.

Zookeeper Katie Kessler drove to Morgantown, West Virginia Friday night to meet Columbus Zoo Assistant Curator Shannon Morarity and veterinarian Dr. Priya Bapodra-Villaverde. "On Saturday, our staff provided the calf the warmed plasma to help improve his immune system and strength".

Just when you thought you were done with giraffe babies, the Woodland Park Zoo pulls you back in: After months of eager anticipation (and a livestream) Seattle's zoo has welcomed a new baby giraffe.

"The animal care team at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium has done voluntary training with giraffes and other species to allow them to participate in their own care, such as receiving injections as well as drawing blood", Bapodra-Villaverde said in a Maryland Zoo statement.

"We are so grateful to the team at the Columbus Zoo for providing us with this potentially lifesaving plasma", said Cantwell. "The teamwork to help this calf really extends out from our Zoo to the rest of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) community and we really appreciate it".

"So far, mother and calf are bonding". "We know what we're working with and we know what to do and now, it's about about if we can get him over that hump".

Zookeepers started the calf on a bottle Monday, though "giraffes are pretty notorious for being challenging getting onto a bottle", Sander said.

The baby will stay with his mother, Kesi, in the Giraffe House, which remains closed to the public.
