"That's the source of unity, and more than ever, we must embrace it, so that on this special night, I leave you with three great American words, that for generations have torn down barriers, built bridges of unity, and defied those who have sought to pull us apart, ladies and gentlemen, let's play ball". After accepting it gracefully, Barton cracked, "Next year we won't be so nice".

"It seems like you are going to have every camera in the country there, even internationally", said Republican starting pitcher Mark Walker of North Carolina.

"The security detail saved a lot of lives", he said.

The family of a lobbyist shot multiple times during a Republican baseball practice outside Washington says he has undergone additional surgery and doctors expect a full recovery.

Texas Rep. Roger Williams said that one of his aides, Zack Barth, was shot but was doing well and expected to fully recover.

USA lawmakers returned to regular business on Thursday and prepared to play their annual charity baseball game, one day after a man who had expressed anger toward President Donald Trump opened fire on Republican legislators, leaving a senior congressman in critical condition.

He was hit in the left hip, suffering injuries to internal organs, broken bones and severe bleeding. In the immediate aftermath Wednesday the extent of his injuries was not widely known. He had a history of posting angry messages against Trump and other Republicans on social media.

Shooter James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Ill., was shot and died later Wednesday of his wounds in the hospital.

Other lawmakers spoke out about threats they had received as they left a law enforcement briefing with officials in Washington D.C. on Thursday. They signed oversized cards for the wounded.

The annual Congressional Baseball Game pits Republicans against Democrats, but this year the focus has turned to showing unity in the wake of the shooting.

Speaking on the House floor, Rep. Glenn Thompson, R-Pa., issued a call to "replace the hateful rhetoric and resistance with respect". "From everything we've known in our interactions with him, he never tipped off and gave any indication that he was violent in any way". "How dare they say such a thing", Pelosi said. The popular and gregarious lawmaker is known for his love of baseball and handed out commemorative bats when he secured the job of House whip several years ago.

Tonight congressional Republicans and Democrats are facing off on the baseball field for their annual charity game. "We continue to seek information on any encounters the public may have had with him in his home state of IL or in Alexandria".

The man's apparent Facebook page included strong criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration. Lawmakers, including many of those who were at the practice, praised the decision. The Alabama lawmaker said he colleague "crawled into the outfield, leaving a trail of blood". Scalise is a member of the team and had been fielding balls at second base in preparation for the game when he was shot.

"As far as winning and losing, I think that's far from anybody's mind right now", Flake said.

The FBI said it had processed a white conversion van owned by Hodgkinson, which was parked at the YMCA adjacent to where the shooting happened. Many on the Republican side were fresh from the horror of the ballfield shooting rampage a day earlier.
