Wind howling as final round at Erin Hills gets under way

It's interesting to see where the USGA has gone with the U.S. Open, being a little more friendly than in years' past.

Champ and Scottie Scheffler are tied at 1 under. Going into the final round, 42 players were still under par.

Scheffler plays for the University of Texas, and Champ plays for Texas A&M. In 2014, he finished fifth at the Masters, second at the U.S. Open and British Open and the third at the PGA Championship.

Thomas was tied for 24th at two under par, five strokes off the pace after Friday's second round.

Justin Thomas set a U.S. Open record by shooting nine-under on Saturday to card a 63.

But in the previous two U.S. Opens, Johnson added life to what is traditionally golf's toughest and often most drama-free major.

Koepka birdied his first two holes to get to 13 under. They each hit their first shot into the rough. He hit 12 of the 14 fairways in the second round, and one of the misses came on No. 15, when he was in desperation mode and tried to drive the green on the 357-yard hole.

"It will be exciting", said Spieth, who has spent the annual Spring Break holiday with Thomas and Fowler the last two years.

Former champion Jordan Spieth was among the interested spectators as the US Open headed for a thrilling climax at Erin Hills on Sunday. The soft Black Course allowed players to take dead aim, and Barnes opened with rounds of 67 and 65.

China's Li Haotong demonstrated what could go wrong as he struggled to an 84 which contained two birdies, two double bogeys, a triple bogey and seven bogeys, six of which came in succession from the third.

Three pars later, it was all over. Then again, Spieth has always said Ellie is the funniest member of the family. It was never that way in the U.S. Open. And he kept right on going early in the third round, rolling in a 25-foot eagle putt on the par-5 fourth hole to reach 11-under par.

The lead, however, belonged to Brian Harman. About all that save Erin Hills from another onslaught was a forecast for the strongest wind of the week. If somebody does it tomorrow to win the U.S. Open by one, that's the specialness of my round. It features a silhouette of Palmer in mid-stride, tossing his visor in the air. At that point, he was leading by seven shots. He tees off later on Sunday. But at 28, Fowler is the ninth-ranked player in the world and should be more than ready for Sunday. He tees off later Sunday.

Whoever emerged victorious would definitely have earned it given the conditions which were reminiscent of the final round of the 1992 US Open at Pebble Beach. The final-round average was 77.2, and 20 players shot in the 80s.

"It looks as though the weather conditions are going to be a lot more challenging today at Erin Hills", Kite said.

"I think since my dad dropped me off at football practice and told me to not be disappointed if I didn't get to play at all", Harman said, drawing laughs.

Brian Harman had the lead at 12 under coming into the day.

The wind is gusting up to 25 miles per hour with the forecast calling for it to go as high as 30 miles per hour in the afternoon when the leaders tee off.

Erin - Rickie Fowler is confident of "getting the job done" after resurrecting his hopes of a maiden major at the US Open on Saturday. He had 310 yards to the hole when he hit 3-wood that could have led to big trouble if he went too far long or left.

Then again, none of the top 16 on the leaderboard has ever won a major.
