World No 1 Angelique Kerber has withdrawn from next week's Aegon Open after a recurrence of a hamstring problem.

Big favourite of the tournament, but only looking at the WTA Rankings, is Angelique Kerber.

The German has been struggled with a hamstring strain in her left leg but she was hoping to get some competitive action in before Wimbledon.

"It was fine but then it comes back a little bit".

"I'm still hopeful of playing next week at Eastbourne, and I really want to be right for Wimbledon".

"It was OK and I started practising again after Paris and then I felt it again in the last few days". She said the injury flared up again when she returned to the courts last week.

In the top half there is also Petra Kvitova who plays her second tournament since the comeback at Roland Garros: the Czech player will open her grass-courts campaign against the Australian Daria Gavrilova. In the second round Kerber, who reached the final past year at Wimbledon, could play against Lauren Davis or Naomi Osaka, while in the quarter-finals there could be an interesting match against Kristina Mladenovic.

Despite the long list of pullouts, three top 10 players are still slated to compete in Birmingham, with World No.5 Elina Svitolina as the top-ranked player in the draw along with Dominika Cibulkova and home favorite Johanna Konta.
