Andre Ward beats Sergey Kovalev in Las Vegas rematch

The bout headlined the boxing event held at Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas with a four-fight main card.

If Ward is a master of the American school, Kovalev is straight outta the Soviet system, an orthodox, come forward, relentless puncher. Ward said he noticed that and continued to go downstairs. I don't want to call him a frontrunner, but if he's not having his way, he's got to dig deep.

"I wasn't hurt, I could have carried on". "It takes something to do something".

It had been a competitive fight until the eighth round, when Ward landed a ferocious right hand on the chin and Kovalev turned jelly-legged. However, rather than calling a halt to the action, referee Tony Weeks saw that Kovalev's body language was that of a fighter who may have wanted out and called a surprising halt to the bout. I went back to the body. "I'm right where I need to be. Then the referee stopped the fight". "We didn't say anything about it". All I got to do is be myself and that will be enough.

"They can talk about the low blows but there were rabbit punches that he threw, too", Ward said.

Virgil Hunter, Ward's careerlong trainer, was satisfied with the outcome. Kovalev said he was gassed because he over-trained. The first was Chad Dawson. And they laughed at me. But Ward has smart defensive skills and should be able to avoid Kovalev's punishing left hooks. Obviously, Kovalev is the more accomplished finisher of the two, and it will be interesting to see if he tries to get Ward down early again.

Kovalev, 34, has been angry for months and has been wearing a hat emblazoned with "WAR" during the buildup to Saturday's fight.

One man not impressed with the stoppage was former world champion, Paulie Malignaggi. I had to give him different looks. "Facing a great fighter, you've got to raise your game to the next level". "I'm the pro. World champion should fight everywhere". A left and a hard right by Ward connects as the bell rings. Kovalev seemed mystified by the turn of events. Kovalev was angry and said that the American judges were biased toward Ward. "I'm 13 years in and I've been doing it against the best". I was better, and he was better this fight. [Ward] punched me low blow already a few times during the fight. "It is insane. I want another fight with him". "I didn't feel the punch". We're getting ready for my favorite part, which is the fight. It didn't hurt me. Drakulich ruled it a knockout, and state commission officials huddled before they supported the ref's decision, instead of giving Rigondeaux a no contest or even disqualifying him.

Ward claimed victory via stoppage in the eighth round.

Kovalev starts out jabbing and they fall into a clinch. This time I will not be empty - Ward will be fighting Krusher. "Am I No. 1 now?" He's not happy about what he said were racist overtones in videos sent out by Kovalev and his team, and unhappy Kovalev keeps questioning the legitimacy of his win in the first fight.

Andre Ward defeated Sergey Kovalev in the rematch, completely without deserving.

The fight will be televised on HBO pay-per-view, which has some in boxing scratching their heads.

The eighth-round knockout cemented Ward as one of boxing's pound-for-pound best and defended his WBO, IBF and WBA belts.

Asked what he would do next, Ward said, "Cruiserweight?" Ward has not fought outside of the 50 United States since June 2008 and has fought just two fights in his career that weren't on US soil. The challenger, Kovalev is a man from another time as well as another place. He was so spectacular tonight. Who he fights next? For it was Kovalev who was long known as the terrifying ring monster. "He deserves to enjoy the moment".
