All talk, few trades before NHL's expansion roster freeze

Any trades made by the Golden Knights won't formally be announced until Wednesday. "Per the guidelines that were set forth under the expansion draft rules, we have submitted our protected list to the National Hockey League", general manager Doug Wilson said in a media statement.

What we do know is that the first expansion draft of the NHL's salary-cap era will be held and the Golden Knights, the NHL's 31st team, will pick their team. McPhee said Sunday that a team must offer the Golden Knights an asset "better" than the player he can claim in the draft. If a veteran catches McPhee's eyes that's okay, but he must be able to contribute on the ice and help create a winning environment inside the locker room.

McPhee told reporters Sunday that "there were no surprises" when the Golden Knights received the lists and that he was "really pleased with what's available". Pending unrestricted free agents Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau were also left unprotected, as expected.

Terms of the NHL Expansion Draft state that every team is required to expose at least two forwards and one rear guard that are under contract for the 2017-18 season and have played a minimum of either 40 NHL games during the 2016-17 campaign or 70 NHL contests during the previous two seasons.

Nic Dowd, center: Potentially useful player, but you can only protect so many.

Electing to protect seven forwards, three defensemen and a goaltender-in lieu of protecting eight total players regardless of position-St.

The Blues can lose only one player in the expansion draft process. The flip isn't going to please some in Boston, but unless the Bruins have a deal in place to save Colin, he could be the Miller leaving town.

As for Dale Tallon's strategy, I think it's pretty clear how much he values the players he drafted. News of this broke after the Stanley Cup run and ensured the Penguins wouldn't have had to scramble this week to trade Fleury, or worse buy him out as a last ditch effort to get him off the roster and keep Murray protected. Girardi and the Rangers bid an emotional goodbye after 11 seasons, but it was a necessary move as many of these are with Vegas about to poach 30 players for its inaugural season. Marchessault is a free agent after this coming season. Unlike Thornton, though, I'm not convinced Marleau wants to stay in San Jose.

The Calgary Flames roster is filled with quality forwards, but not everyone can be protected in the upcoming expansion draft.

Vegas will have to take one player - and one player only - from each of the 30 National Hockey League teams.

With that in mind, which players will the Blackhawks protect, and which ones will they let go?

"We were expecting this mass re-distribution of players". Why make a decision when we can put it off until the last minute?

- They lost their third-round pick as compensation for hiring head coach Pete DeBoer from the Devils.

The Canes could use the 7-3-1 option, protecting forwards Staal, Jeff Skinner, Victor Rask, Elias Lindholm, Teuvo Teravainen, Brock McGinn and Phil Di Giuseppe, and defensemen Justin Faulk, Ryan Murphy and possibly Trevor Carrick.
