"This is a awful deal sow violence and instability in the region, and they (the Obama administration - ed.) did not get anything in return", said trump.

Trudeau was asked about U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to restore some travel and economic restrictions on Cuba, partially turning back the clock on an easing of tensions embarked upon by Democratic predecessor Barack Obama. The president announced changes to Obama-era Cuba policy, and challenged the Castro government to negotiate a better deal.

Trump said he will ask the Department of Treasury and Department of Commerce to develop regulations to prohibit United States transactions with Cuba's military, intelligence and security services.

"We're also going to stand with the Cuban people in their fight against communist oppression", Trump said. But individual educational trips to Cuba - otherwise called "people-to-people travel" will end. Hutchinson said he was glad Trump planned to keep the US embassy open in Cuba. Only the U.S. Congress can lift the embargo, and lawmakers, especially those of Cuban heritage, like Sen.

Mr. Trump thanked the Louisiana Republican for - in the worst way possible - bringing about unity to the nation.

"We have invested significant resources establishing a presence in Cuba, and with one hotel open and another in the pipeline we have just begun our work creating opportunity and a more vibrant tourism sector on the island", the company said. Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson in 2015 was the first governor to travel to Cuba since the former Cold War foes reopened embassies in their respective countries.

Cuban-Americans will still be able to travel to Cuba and send remittances, .

"The message that comes out of the administration has to be smart and strategic rather than discouraging travel", Giancarlo Sopo, director of Cuban-American tour group CubaOne, told Travel + Leisure. That change is likely to significantly curtail US tourism on the island as GAESA has a near monopoly on retail stores, and controls a large swath of foreign-run hotels in the country. That is about the same number of people who visited Cuba during the whole of 2016.

However, the new presidential directive is expected to set out stricter enforcement of the ban on Americans traveling to Cuba as tourists.

Trump's move was a direct rebuke to Obama, for whom the diplomatic opening with Cuba was a central accomplishment of his presidency.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: In my recent trip overseas, I said that the United States is adopting a principled realism, rooted in our values, shared interests, and common sense.
