Scalise, 51, and three others were wounded when a man identified as James Hodgkinson, 66, from the St. Louis suburb of Belleville, Illinois opened fire on Republican lawmakers in Alexandria, Virginia practicing for the charity game.

Donald Trump made an unannounced visit along with first lady Melania Trump and White House physician Ronny Jackson to the hospital Wednesday night hours after Scalise's first surgery following the shooting at a Republican team charity baseball practice at the Eugene Simpson Stadium Park in Alexandria, Va.

Scalise had been at "imminent risk of death" when he was first brought into the hospital on Wednesday, and he received many units of transfused blood, Sava said. "He's in some trouble".

"We should know over the next day or so how he does", Cassidy said. "Steve, in his own way, may have brought some unity to our long divided county".

"Baseball is the American game, to be able to play it, and that's why we have to play this game tonight", said Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas, who injured his ankle in the chaos Wednesday and will watch from the third-base coaching box. "The bullet travelled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and caused severe bleeding". Congressional aide Zack Barth, Tysons Food lobbyist Matt Mika and Capitol Police Officer David Bailey were also shot in the attack, but have since been released from the hospital.

Vice President Mike Pence, speaking in Miami Thursday afternoon, offered prayers for Scalise and praised Capitol Police who engaged the suspect.

The FBI said it was investigating the gunman's "activities and social media impressions in the months leading up to yesterday's incident".

"We're especially thankful for the fearless police officers that ran into danger without regard to their personal safety", Pence said. He had been living out of his van in the Alexandria area in recent months, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said. His condition is critical, and he will require additional operations.

The hospital said late Wednesday that Scalise was in critical condition after a gunshot wound to the hip.

For the second consecutive day, the Louisiana lawmaker continued to fight for his life and authorities continued to investigate the shooting - and the nation braced for every update.

"As far as winning and losing, I think that's far from anybody's mind right now", Flake said.

He was shot multiple times, including at least once in the chest. The other victims are recovering from their wounds, while the gunman died after a shootout with police.
