Dems bridle as some in GOP blame shooting on the left

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi on Thursday suggested that Fox News is is the leading cause of political violence like that which unfolded near the Capitol on Wednesday. Among those injured was House Majority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise, and we've since learned that the suspected shooter, James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois, was apparently a Bernie Sanders supporter and fervent critic of the Republican party.

She then listed out a series of examples of harsh political rhetoric from the right.

"He's got a ways to go", Ryan said of Scalise. That's what she said. Little babies, little children in kindergarten were massacred and nothing happened.

"I don't know whether the president obstructed justice, but I do know that he abuses power", she said.

But as several voices supportive of President Donald Trump, like former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, drew lines between anti-Trump rhetoric and the shooting, Pelosi pushed back earlier Thursday, arguing the Republican insistence that Democratic rhetoric was to blame for the shooting rang hollow, given the long record of "vitriolic" language from the Republican side of the aisle.

It is Republicans, Pelosi claimed, who created the "politics of personal destruction".
